Are reptile heat mats fire hazards if kept on soft surfaces?

If you are going to keep him in a critter keeper then you will need to get the smallest heat pad (mini I believe). The larger heat pads would probably melt or damage the surface. I'd also recommend getting a thermostat for the heat pad as they can get hot (100+ for the normal sized ones).
